Mental Health First Aid Certification for Youth and Adults: What It Means for Hart and Haven LLC

Hart and Haven LLC is committed to ongoing learning, growth, and providing neurodiversity-affirming, trauma-informed care. I am excited to share that I am Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certified for both youth and adults, strengthening my ability to support individuals and communities with confidence and compassion.

What Is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an evidence-based training program designed to teach people how to recognize, understand, and respond to signs of mental health challenges and substance use concerns.

Much like CPR helps you respond to a physical emergency, MHFA equips you with practical tools to support someone experiencing a mental health challenge or mental health crisis. You can learn more about MHFA here.

Why MHFA Certification Matters in Occupational Therapy

As occupational therapy practitioners, our work centers on helping people engage in meaningful daily life activities. Mental health plays a critical role in this process.

Becoming MHFA certified enhances our ability to:

  • Support emotional regulation and nervous system needs

  • Recognize when clients may need additional mental health resources

  • Respond in a grounded, nonjudgmental, and affirming way

  • Strengthen safety and trust within therapeutic relationships

This aligns deeply with Hart and Haven LLC’s foundations in:

  • Neurodiversity-affirming care

  • Trauma-informed practice

  • Executive functioning and self-regulation support

Supporting Youth and Adults Across Contexts

MHFA certification for both youth and adults allows us to better meet the needs of:

  • Children and teens navigating identity, school, and social demands

  • Caregivers supporting neurodivergent youth

  • Adults managing burnout, life transitions, or mental health challenges

These certifications supports:

  • Tailoring responses based on developmental needs

  • Supporting family systems and co-regulation

  • Recognizing how mental health shows up differently across the lifespan

A Neurodiversity-Affirming Lens on Mental Health

At Hart and Haven LLC approaches mental health through a neurodiversity-affirming and strengths-based lens. MHFA training complements this by emphasizing:

  • Respect for lived experience

  • Curiosity over judgment

  • Collaborative problem-solving

  • Empowerment and autonomy

Rather than “fixing,” the focus is on supporting access, regulation, and meaningful participation in daily life.

What This Means for Clients and the Community

With Youth MHFA and Adult MHFA certification, I am better equipped to:

  • Hold space for difficult experiences

  • Respond to distress with clarity and care

  • Connect individuals to appropriate supports when needed

  • Integrate mental health awareness into everyday occupational therapy

This is one more step in the commitment to whole-person, compassionate, and evidence-informed care.
