Pride Month, Belonging, and the Power of Authentic Participation
June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the resilience, diversity, and contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities. It is also an opportunity to reflect on what it means to create environments where people can participate fully, express themselves authentically, and experience a genuine sense of belonging.
Hart and Haven LLC believes that every person deserves access to spaces where they are respected, affirmed, and empowered to be themselves. As a neurodiversity-affirming occupational therapy practice, I recognize that identity is an important part of health, well-being, and participation in daily life.
What Pride Means Beyond Celebration
Pride Month is rooted in advocacy, visibility, and the ongoing pursuit of equity. Pride honors the history of LGBTQIA+ individuals who have worked to create safer, more inclusive communities while also acknowledging the work that remains.
For many LGBTQIA+ individuals, daily life can involve navigating environments that were not designed with their identities and experiences in mind. Barriers to belonging can affect participation in school, work, healthcare, relationships, and community activities. These experiences can impact overall well-being and quality of life. Creating affirming spaces is about fostering environments where people can thrive.
The Connection Between Identity and Occupational Participation
Occupational therapy recognizes that meaningful participation in everyday activities contributes to health and well-being. These activities, or occupations, include everything from self-care and work to hobbies, social connection, advocacy, and community engagement.
When individuals feel safe expressing their authentic identities, they are often better able to engage in meaningful occupations that align with their values, interests, and goals. Conversely, when people feel pressured to hide or mask aspects of themselves, participation can become more difficult and exhausting.
Authentic participation allows people to:
Build meaningful relationships
Engage in community activities
Explore interests and passions
Advocate for their needs
Develop a stronger sense of self
Experience greater satisfaction and well-being
Hart and Haven LLC veiws identity affirmation as an important component of supporting meaningful participation in daily life.
Neurodiversity and LGBTQIA+ Communities
Research and lived experiences continue to highlight meaningful overlap between neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ communities. Many individuals identify as both neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+, bringing unique strengths, perspectives, and experiences to their communities.
Because of this intersection, it is especially important for healthcare providers, educators, employers, and community organizations to understand the value of affirming both neurodiversity and gender and sexual diversity.
Affirming support recognizes that differences are not deficits. Rather than focusing on changing who someone is, affirming approaches seek to understand individual experiences, remove barriers, and support participation in ways that align with a person's values and goals.
Building Communities of Belonging
Belonging is more than being included in a space. Belonging means feeling welcomed, valued, respected, and able to participate authentically.
Creating communities of belonging can look like:
Using affirming and inclusive language
Respecting chosen names and pronouns
Listening to lived experiences
Challenging barriers to access and participation
Recognizing diverse ways of communicating and engaging
Creating opportunities for self-advocacy and choice
Celebrating diversity as a strength
These practices benefit everyone by fostering more inclusive, compassionate, and supportive communities.
Celebrating Pride All Year Long
While Pride Month offers an important opportunity for celebration and reflection, inclusion and affirmation should not be limited to a single month. Small actions taken throughout the year can help create environments where LGBTQIA+ individuals feel seen, supported, and valued.
Hart and Haven LLC remains committed to providing neurodiversity-affirming, person-centered services that honor the unique identities, strengths, and goals of every individual we serve.
This Pride Month, join Hart and Haven LLC in celebrating authenticity, self-expression, community, and the many ways people contribute their unique gifts to the world. I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn from and stand alongside LGBTQIA+ community.
Happy Pride Month from Hart and Haven LLC.
